Patriot Diesel DPF Issues: Black Smoke & Sensor Failures

My 2011 Patriot diesel is acting up with multiple exhaust sensor issues. The warning light stays on, DPF regeneration fails, and there is visible smoke during acceleration. Vehicle diagnostics suggest a possible back pressure sensor malfunction, but I need input from others who have dealt with similar problems. The engine performance has noticeably declined. Has anyone experienced this combination of symptoms and gotten it fixed? What was the actual problem and repair solution in your case? Looking for repair shop experiences and costs to better understand what I might be dealing with.

Having some experience with diesel engines, I faced a very similar issue with my 2013 Compass diesel last year. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I encountered, especially the failed DPF regeneration and engine performance issues. After running vehicle diagnostics, my mechanic confirmed the exhaust back pressure sensor was defective. The sensor was sending incorrect readings, preventing proper DPF regeneration and causing the engine to run inefficiently. The repair involved: Complete sensor replacement, System recalibration, Basic diagnostic testing Total cost was 245 Euro including parts and labor. The repair took about 2 hours, and the problems were completely resolved. Engine performance returned to normal, no more warning lights or smoke issues. To provide more specific advice for your case, could you share: Current mileage, When the problems first started, Any recent maintenance history, Whether the check engine light shows specific error codes These details would help determine if your issue is identical to what I experienced with my Compass and whether the back pressure sensor is definitely the root cause.

Thanks for the detailed information. My current mileage is 31871 KM and I had my last service 3 months ago. The problems started about 2 weeks after the service. Vehicle diagnostics show error codes P2452 and P2453 which point to exhaust system issues. The lack of proper back pressure readings seems to be affecting engine performance significantly. The vehicle emissions are definitely worse than before, as evident from the smoke. I will look into getting the sensor replaced based on your experience. Anyone else have success with just cleaning the sensor rather than full replacement?

Thanks for providing those details. Like your case, my Compass also showed the P2452/P2453 codes. I initially tried cleaning the back pressure sensor to save money, but this only worked temporarily for about a week before the problems returned. The smoke and poor engine performance continued until I opted for the complete sensor replacement. The cleaning attempt actually cost me more in the long run since I ended up paying for both services. A few things I noticed from your information: The timing after service is interesting, as my issues also began shortly after routine maintenance, Your mileage is similar to when my problems occurred, The error codes are identical to what my car displayed The DPF system relies heavily on accurate back pressure readings for proper emission control and regeneration cycles. When the sensor fails, it creates a cascade of issues affecting overall engine performance. If the symptoms match this closely, I would strongly recommend going straight for the sensor replacement rather than attempting cleaning. The labor cost difference is minimal, and the new sensor ensures reliable readings for proper exhaust system function. Based on current parts prices, you should expect to pay around 230-260 Euro for the complete repair, depending on labor rates.

Thanks for such helpful responses. Given the identical error codes and similar timing of issues after service, I will take your advice and go for the full sensor replacement rather than just cleaning. Dealing with declining engine performance and constant warning lights is frustrating enough without risking temporary fixes. My main concern was the exhaust system issues causing permanent damage if left unaddressed. The visible smoke during acceleration is particularly worrying, but it sounds like the back pressure sensor replacement should resolve all these symptoms based on your experience. I will contact a repair shop tomorrow to schedule the sensor replacement and recalibration. The 230-260 Euro cost estimate helps set realistic expectations. Hopefully this will restore proper DPF regeneration and get the engine performance back to normal. Will update once the repair is complete in case others encounter similar pressure sensor problems with their diesel engines.
