Patriot DPF Issues: Warning Signs and Repair Tips

My 2013 Patriot diesel is showing classic DPF issues, warning light on the dash along with reduced power, plus I am seeing smoke under acceleration with a strong exhaust smell. I suspect the DPF pressure sensor is reporting low pressure values, likely preventing proper DPF regeneration. Has anyone faced similar symptoms and gotten them fixed? Particularly interested in knowing what exactly needed replacement and how the repair process went. Looking to gather some real-world experiences before heading to a workshop.

As someone with some mechanical experience, I dealt with a very similar issue on my 2011 Patriot diesel. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I experienced, DPF warning light, sluggish performance, and exhaust issues that prevented proper particulate filter regeneration. The exhaust back pressure sensor was indeed the culprit. I had initially tried forcing a DPF regeneration cycle, but the sensor kept reporting incorrect values, making normal emission control operation impossible. The repair took about 2 hours at my regular workshop and cost 245 Euro, including diagnostics and the new sensor. After the fix, the exhaust system returned to normal operation and the DPF started its regeneration cycles as intended. No more warning lights or performance issues since then. Before offering more specific advice, could you share: Current mileage on your vehicle, How long the warning light has been on, Whether you do mostly city or highway driving, If you have noticed any other warning lights, If you have access to diagnostic tools to read error codes This information would help determine if your issue is identical to what I experienced or if there might be other factors affecting your diesel exhaust system.

Latest service was at 29525 KM with oil and filters changed. The warning light has been active for around 2 days now. Worth noting that my readings are showing abnormally low pressure in the DPF system compared to normal operating values. The particulate filter warning came on shortly after extended city driving with lots of stops. Im getting fault code P2452 which points to the DPF pressure sensor circuit. But given the age and mileage of my Patriot, this sounds quite similar to what you experienced with your sensor replacement fixing these emission control issues. Think I will book it in based on your feedback, as the repair cost seems reasonable to resolve these DPF issues. The exhaust symptoms are getting worse and I want to avoid any permanent damage to the system.

Thanks for providing those details. Yes, that P2452 code along with your symptoms are exactly what I experienced with my Patriot diesel. The low pressure readings from a faulty sensor prevent proper DPF regeneration, leading to those exact exhaust issues. The timing matches too, my sensor failed around 32000 KM, and like yours, the symptoms appeared quite suddenly after city driving. The reduced power mode is actually a protective measure when the diesel exhaust system detects abnormal pressure values. Since getting my pressure sensor replaced, I have had zero DPF issues for over 18 months now. The exhaust smell disappeared immediately, and the engine returned to full power once the new sensor was calibrated. Just make sure the workshop clears any stored fault codes after the repair. One tip from my experience: while the sensor is the likely culprit, have them check the connecting wires and plug too. My mechanic found some minor corrosion on the connector that they cleaned up during the repair, which could have caused future problems if left unchecked.

The data from my vehicle matches everything described, 29525 KM with recent maintenance, and these DPF issues started during city driving. The particulate filter warning and reduced power symptoms are identical to what you experienced. Having the P2452 fault code confirm the DPF pressure sensor is the likely culprit. Since your repair resolved similar exhaust system problems, I will schedule the sensor replacement soon. The 245 Euro cost seems fair to fix these emission control issues and prevent any lasting damage. Good suggestion about checking the wiring connections too. Will make sure to mention the connector inspection when booking the repair. Really hoping this resolves the low pressure readings and gets the DPF regeneration working properly again. The heavy exhaust smell and reduced performance are getting quite annoying. Thanks for sharing your experience. Having a real-world example of a successful fix for these exact symptoms gives me confidence this is the right repair path.
