Patrol hard start lights flicker

My 2004 Nissan Patrol diesel with only 54898 km is a nightmare to start, like the battery is super weak. Plus, the lights flicker sometimes, especially when idling. I checked the battery terminals, and they seem clean. Could it be a dodgy battery even though it's relatively new? Any ideas what to check next?

Summary of the thread

A 2004 Nissan Patrol diesel was experiencing hard starting and flickering lights, suggesting a weak battery. Despite clean battery terminals and a relatively new battery, the issue persisted. The problem was traced to a faulty battery sensor after a diagnostic scan, which was impacting the vehicle's charging system. Replacing the sensor resolved the starting and flickering issues.

Your symptoms suggest a potential issue with the vehicle's charging system. I encountered a similar problem with my previous vehicle, a 2012 BMW 3 Series. The battery exhibited similar characteristics, including difficulty starting and fluctuating light intensity. Have you performed any diagnostic tests to assess the battery voltage and charging current? Are there any fault codes recorded within the vehicle's electronic control unit?

Thanks for the tip! I haven't run any proper diagnostics yet, just the basic visual checks. How did you figure out what was wrong with your BMW? Did you have to go through a bunch of tests, or was it pretty obvious once you hooked it up to a reader?

In my case, the diagnostic scan revealed a fault code associated with the battery voltage sensor. Further investigation confirmed that the sensor was providing erroneous data, thereby impacting the vehicle's charging strategy. Given your described symptoms, it would be prudent to initiate a thorough vehicle diagnostic procedure to ascertain the presence of any stored fault codes and evaluate the functionality of the battery sensor and associated circuitry. I ended up going to the workshop.

You were spot on! The Patrol went to a workshop, and the diagnostics pointed to a faulty battery sensor. They replaced it, and now it starts like a charm, and the lights are steady. Cost me 315€.
