Patrol Oil Pressure Warning

Hi, I have a 2012 Nissan Patrol, gasoline engine, with a worrying issue. The oil pressure warning lamp keeps lighting up and there are loud mechanical noises coming from the engine. The car has 63983 km. Could it be the oil pressure sensor?

Low oil pressure, combined with those noises, is concerning. Have you checked the engine oil level and condition? What oil viscosity are you using? A too-thin oil can cause low pressure, especially in an older engine. Also, when was the last time you changed the oil? It might also be worth checking the oil pressure gauge, if your car has one, to see if it corroborates the warning lamp.

Oil level is fine. I use the recommended oil and changed it recently. What do you mean by checking the oil pressure gauge? Where is it located?

The oil pressure gauge, if fitted, is usually on the instrument cluster, showing the actual oil pressure. If it's reading low (or zero) alongside the warning light and noises, it confirms a real pressure problem. Given the symptoms and recent oil change, a defect in the oil pump itself is unfortunately likely. The loud mechanical noises could indicate damage to engine bearings due to oil starvation. Continuing to run the engine like this risks catastrophic damage. I'd recommend getting it checked by a workshop.

Thanks for the advice. Took it to a workshop. Turns out the oil pump was defective, as you suspected. They replaced it. Total cost 755€. Runs fine now.
