Patrol rain light sensor malfunction

Having a weird issue with my 2001 Nissan Patrol, diesel engine, with about 216k on the clock. My rain-light sensor seems to have gone bonkers. I get an error stored, the automatic wipers don't work in the rain, no auto headlight control, and the speedometer dimming function is totally dead! Even weirder, the lights sometimes just switch on by themselves. Anyone ever dealt with this before? Could this be a simple electrical fault or something more sinister?

Whoa, sounds familiar! I’ve got a Patrol as well and had some crazy sensor stuff happening a while back. Did you check for bubbles under the gel pad on the windshield where the sensor sits? Seems like moisture getting in there can cause all sorts of electrical mayhem. Have you tried any sensor calibration or is it completely unresponsive?

Bubbles under the gel pad, huh? I haven't checked that specifically. Where exactly should I be looking, and is it something I can easily see myself, or am I better off having a workshop take a look? Is that something that can be resolved without replacing car components?

Yeah, just look closely at the windshield, from the outside, where the sensor is mounted behind the rearview mirror. You might see small bubbles or a cloudy patch under that gel pad. Honestly, from what I remember, it's a pain to fix yourself properly. I ended up taking mine to a shop. They replaced the gel pad and recalibrated the sensor. If the bubbles are there, I’d say just get it checked by a professional. It's likely the root cause of your malfunctioning sensor issues. Better than messing something else up!

Thanks a bunch for the heads up! I took your advice and had a look. Sure enough, bubbles galore under that gel pad. Dropped it off at the workshop, and they confirmed it. 62€ later, new gel pad, sensor recalibrated, and everything's working perfectly again. You saved me a ton of time and frustration!
