Peugeot 106 EGR Valve Issue

The check engine light has been on for about a week now. I don't have an OBD2 scanner myself. If it is the EGR valve, is it something I could potentially fix myself, or am I better off taking it to a professional?

Given the symptoms and the fact that you don't have a scanner, I'd strongly suggest taking it to a workshop. A jammed EGR valve can cause further damage if not addressed properly. Plus, diagnosing it without the proper tools can be tricky. It really does sound like that's the problem, but a proper diagnosis is key.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to a local workshop, and they confirmed it was indeed the EGR valve. The total repair cost came to 355€. The car runs perfectly now. I really appreciate your help!

Sounds like a classic EGR valve issue, especially with those symptoms. The hissing could be exhaust leaking past a faulty valve. Has the check engine light been on for a while? Do you have access to an OBD2 scanner to check the error code? That would really help narrow it down. It could also be related to the catalytic converter but EGR is more likely.
