Good point. I'll check the gearbox oil level as soon as I can. Where exactly is the dipstick for the gearbox on this model? I've had a quick look but can't seem to find it.

There is likely no dipstick to check the level. Those gearboxes often don't have one. You have to check the oil level via a dedicated check screw. I'd recommend getting it checked at a workshop, it's difficult to access. It really sounds like it could be connected.

Thanks, I appreciate the insight. I followed your advice and took it to a workshop and, as you suspected, the transmission oil level was far too low. After they topped it up and replaced the faulty sensor, everything's running smoothly again. The final bill was 365€.

Sounds like a plausible cause and effect chain. Is the gearbox oil level alright? A low oil level might result in the sensor reporting strange temperatures and the described symptoms. Also, makes the noises more plausible.
