Peugeot 2008 Crankshaft Camshaft Error

My 2014 Peugeot 2008 diesel is throwing a 'crankshaft to camshaft reference value' error. The check engine light is on, and it feels like I'm driving with half the engine power. The response is sluggish, and I'm filling up way more often. It's only done 32872 km... Has anyone dealt with this before? What could it be?

Sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my 2008 (petrol though) – check engine light, sluggish performance. That reference value thing points to a possible synchronization problem between the crankshaft and camshaft. Basically, the engine's timing is off. Did you check the crank sensor?

You mentioned the crank sensor. Is that likely the main culprit? And how difficult was it to diagnose or fix? I'm trying to avoid a massive bill if I can...

Yeah, the crank sensor is a prime suspect. It tells the engine control unit (ECU) the position and speed of the crankshaft. If it's faulty, the ECU gets bad data, leading to those timing errors and performance issues. Diagnosing it yourself can be tricky without the right tools. I ended up taking mine to a workshop; they confirmed it was the crank sensor and replaced it. Cost me around 340€ all in with labour. But that fixed it. Worth getting checked before you do too many miles and make it worse.

Thanks for the insights! That's incredibly helpful. Looks like a trip to the workshop is unavoidable. At least I have a solid starting point now and know what to expect. Hopefully, it’s just the crank sensor like yours. I’ll share the outcome once I get it sorted.
