Peugeot 2008 exhaust back pressure sensor issue
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Peugeot 2008 with low mileage exhibited a warning light and smoke during acceleration, indicating a potential issue with the exhaust back pressure sensor. The problem could be due to soot buildup on the sensor, causing faulty readings. Cleaning the sensor might resolve the issue, but professional diagnosis and repair are recommended to ensure the entire emissions system is functioning correctly. The problem was confirmed to be the sensor, which was replaced at a workshop.

So, you’re suggesting that the sensor itself might be okay, but just giving a bad reading due to soot buildup? Is it difficult to access and clean? Is there is a risk of damaging it?

Exactly! In my Volvo's case, it was easy to reach. I just sprayed a bit of electrical contact cleaner to remove the soot. However, given it's the exhaust system, and you're seeing smoke, I am now thinking that it would be best to seek professional help to check the whole emissions system. If it’s indeed a defective sensor, at least you'll have a precise diagnosis and repair.

I appreciate the input. I've booked it in at the workshop. It was the exhaust back pressure sensor, and with labor and parts, it came to 245€. All sorted now.

That sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms – warning light and smoke on acceleration – with my old Volvo a few years back. Although the car is different, could the sensor be covered in soot and giving a faulty reading? Maybe try cleaning it first?
