Peugeot 2008 stiff steering
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Peugeot 2008 with 42,073 km exhibited stiff steering and steering wheel vibrations, potentially linked to the steering angle sensor or incorrect coding affecting electronic stability. The issue was confirmed by the intermittent ESP light. A diagnostic check revealed the problem was indeed the steering angle sensor and faulty coding. Replacing the sensor and aligning the wheels resolved the issue, improving the steering performance.

The ESP light does come on sometimes, especially when the steering is stiff. Given your Volvo experience, do you think it's most likely faulty coding? Or were there other things I should check before replacing the sensor?

For me, it was definitely the steering angle sensor, and I think incorrect coding was the cause. Since your ESP light is intermittent, get a diagnostic check at a good workshop to confirm the error codes before you do any work. Replacing parts without checking could be expensive.

I took your advice and had it checked. It was the steering angle sensor and faulty coding, just like you suspected. The repair, including a new sensor and wheel alignment, cost 195€. The steering is much better now. Thanks for the help.

I had a similar issue with my old Volvo V60. The steering felt heavy, like the power assist was cutting in and out. Is the ESP light on? That was a symptom for me, pointing to a steering angle sensor problem.
