Peugeot 206 Crankshaft Camshaft Error

I'm having a weird issue with my 2005 Peugeot 206, diesel engine. The check engine light is on, and the car feels like it's lost a good chunk of power. Engine response is sluggish, and I'm pretty sure I'm burning more fuel than usual. I've got about 165k km on the clock. After hooking it up to a code reader, it's showing a 'Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value' error. Could this be a timing chain issue, or am I looking at something else?

The error code you've described suggests a potential synchronization problem between the crankshaft and camshaft positions. While a stretched timing chain can certainly cause such an issue, it's more frequently attributed to a faulty crankshaft position sensor. A failing sensor can send inaccurate signals to the ECU, leading to the symptoms you've reported. I suggest you check the sensor first, it's also much easier to replace than the timing chain. Have you checked the wiring to the sensor?

Thanks for the quick reply! So, you're leaning towards the crank sensor more than the timing chain itself? I haven't checked the wiring yet, but I will definitely take a look. Is there any way to test the sensor itself before I go ahead and replace it, or is it generally just better to swap it out and see what happens? Any particular things I should look for when inspecting the wiring?

While thorough sensor testing is possible with an oscilloscope, observing the signal pattern, the simpler route is usually replacement, given the sensor's relatively low cost. Inspect the wiring for any signs of damage – chafing, breaks, or corrosion. However, given the symptoms and error code, I strongly advise consulting a qualified workshop. A misdiagnosed timing chain issue can lead to severe engine damage if left unaddressed, and they will be able to properly diagnose the issue with appropriate tools.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I'll check the wiring, but I think taking it to a shop is the best bet. It was the crank sensor as you suspected, cost me 340€ to get it sorted including labour. All the best!
