Peugeot 206 diesel hard start rough idle

Having a heck of a time with my 2004 Peugeot 206 diesel. It's got 175,000 km on the clock. Lately, it's been a real pain to start, especially when it's cold. Fuel consumption has definitely gone up, and the engine just doesn't have the same oomph it used to. Plus, it idles really rough, almost like it wants to stall. Sometimes, it actually DOES stall at idle. I'm thinking it might be a dodgy fuel injector – maybe just a dirty valve? Anyone else had this kind of trouble?

Summary of the thread

The 2004 Peugeot 206 diesel is experiencing hard starting, increased fuel consumption, and rough idling, sometimes stalling. A potential cause could be a faulty or dirty fuel injector, leading to uneven fuel spray. A suggested solution is to have the injectors checked and possibly cleaned by a professional mechanic to resolve the issue.

Sounds familiar! I had a similar problem with my Peugeot 206 (though mine's a bit newer). Hard starting, rough idle... the whole nine yards. It felt like the engine was trying to run on fumes. Have you checked your emissions? Mine were through the roof. Think of it like a clogged artery – the fuel can't get where it needs to go properly.

Emissions I didn't check! So, what exactly was the culprit in your case? Was it actually the injector itself, or something else causing the misfire?

Pretty sure it was a dirty injector. The mechanic told me it was spraying unevenly, like a garden hose with a kink in it. I'd definitely take it to a workshop. These diesel engines are quite sensitive, and you don't want to mess anything up. The repair ended up costing me 515€.

Thanks a lot for the insight! I'll definitely take it to a trusted shop. It's good to know what to expect, and it sounds like that’s most likely the issue. Hopefully, cleaning the injectors will do the trick and I won't need new ones. Thanks again!
