Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked for leaks yet, but that's a good shout. The oil smell and contamination is something I'll look into as well. When you mention the breather, are you talking about the transfer case breather specifically? I'm not even sure where it is located.

Yeah, the transfer case breather. On mine it was a tiny little cap thingy on the top of the case. If it's clogged, pressure builds up and messes with shifting. If you're not comfortable poking around, honestly, get it to a workshop. Gear grinding is a terrible sign and not worth ignoring. Best get a trained pair of eyes on it before things get worse.

Thanks. I appreciate the advice about the breather and the heads-up on the gear grinding. A workshop visit sounds like the smartest move at this point. Turns out defective gears were the issue, and the whole repair cost me about 330€. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I had similar problems with my 206, only my symptoms were a bit more dramatic! Gear grinding, especially when cold. I'd check for oil leakage around the transfer case first. Does the oil smell burnt, or look contaminated? Could also be a blocked breather causing pressure issues. When was the gear oil last changed?
