Thanks! Yes, I checked the fuses and they're fine. Can you tell me more about the problem you had with your Opel Astra? Were there any other symptoms or diagnostic codes?

Okay, if the fuses are good and you're seeing smoke, it probably is the control unit. In my case, after checking the fuses, the mechanic said the unit itself was faulty and needed replacing. Honestly, save yourself the headache and get it checked out at a workshop. They have the proper tools to diagnose it fully.

Thanks for the advice. I went to a technician. They confirmed a defective glow control unit, specifically a faulty connection as I thought. The repair was 95€, including parts and labor. The car is running well now. Thanks again.

Hey, sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra, also a diesel. The symptoms were almost identical - the preheating light staying on, engine light popping up, and some nasty smoke. For me it was also the glow control unit. Did you check the fuses? Sometimes it's just a blown fuse causing the problem before you start replacing the whole control unit.
