Thanks. I haven't examined the cable or plug connections yet. Could a defective connection explain the error code, or would that more likely indicate a faulty switch?

A defective connection is definitely a plausible explanation for the error code. If the control unit detects an unexpected voltage drop or interruption due to a bad connection, it will register an error. Given the car's age, corrosion is quite likely. I still recommend a workshop visit; the fault is very likely in the cable or plug connection.

I appreciate the confirmation. I'll inspect the cable and plug connections and take it to the workshop. The repair cost was 95€. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like a classic faulty headlight switch. Have you checked the cable and plug connections to the switch itself? A loose or corroded connection can cause these symptoms. Try wiggling the connector with the lights on to see if the issue replicates.
