Peugeot 206 NOx Storage Catalyst Aging

I'm concerned about my 2013 Peugeot 206 (gasoline engine). Lately, the check engine light keeps appearing, and the error memory indicates an issue with NOx storage catalyst aging. To top it off, there's a distinct smell of exhaust fumes. Could this be a major issue?

Summary of the thread

The conversation revolves around a 2013 Peugeot 206 experiencing a check engine light due to NOx storage catalyst aging, accompanied by a noticeable exhaust smell. The core problem is suspected to be related to an exhaust leak, which can affect the NOx system. The suggested solution is to inspect the exhaust system for leaks, particularly around the exhaust manifold, pipes, and catalytic converter. A professional inspection is recommended, which ultimately confirms and resolves the issue with a repair.

Well, that's not great news, but let's not jump to conclusions. NOx issues can be tricky. Exhaust smell is definitely a red flag. Any noticeable decrease in fuel economy or engine performance? When was the last time you had the exhaust system checked for leaks? A small leak can throw off the entire system and cause those NOx errors.

Thanks for the quick response! I haven't noticed any significant changes in fuel consumption or performance. Regarding exhaust leak checks, I haven't had one recently. Where exactly should I be looking for these leaks?

Alright, no performance issues is a small plus. Now, exhaust leaks are sneaky devils. Common spots are around the exhaust manifold, along the exhaust pipes (especially at joints and welds), and near the catalytic converter. Given the NOx code, a leak upstream of the catalyst is highly suspicious. You can try listening for hissing sounds when the engine is cold. But honestly, without proper equipment, it's tough to pinpoint. I'd recommend a professional inspection at this stage. Better safe than sorry when dealing with emissions stuff.

I appreciate your detailed insights. I took your advice and had it checked by a mechanic. You were spot-on! It turned out to be a leak in the exhaust system, which was causing the NOx issue. The repair cost me 265€, but at least the problem is resolved. Thanks again!
