Peugeot 206 power loss battery light
Summary of the thread
The conversation centers around a 2004 Peugeot 206 experiencing power loss, a constantly illuminated battery warning light, poor starting, and flickering lights. These symptoms suggest a potential generator (alternator) issue. A suggested solution is to measure the voltage at the battery terminals; if it's significantly below 14 volts when the engine is running, the alternator may be faulty. Checking the serpentine belt for wear is also advised, but the likely cause is a defective generator, necessitating professional repair.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the serpentine belt myself, but I'll definitely take a look. Where exactly should I measure the voltage, and what reading am I looking for? Just want to make sure I'm doing it right. Is it a difficult fix?

Measuring the voltage at the battery terminals with a multimeter is the way to go. You should see around 14 volts when the engine is running. If it's significantly lower, like 12 volts or less, your alternator is likely kaput. While a worn belt could be the culprit, given the stored error code, I'd bet on a defective generator. Honestly, unless you're comfortable with car electrics, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. Replacing the alternator isn't the hardest job, but it's fiddly and requires some specialized tools.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I checked the voltage, and it's way below 14V. Also had a look at the belt, it looks ok. I'm not confident enough to replace the generator myself, so I'll take it to a workshop. They quoted me around 960€ for the repair. Seems like the generator is indeed the problem. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

Sounds familiar! I've had similar issues with my 206. The weak lights and starting problems are classic signs. Have you checked the serpentine belt? A slipping belt can cause the alternator to not charge properly, leading to a low battery. What's the voltage reading when the engine is running?
