Peugeot 207 Brake Pedal Numbness

Hi, I'm having trouble with my 2006 Peugeot 207 diesel. It's got about 210439 km on the clock. Recently, I've noticed a strange feedback from the brake pedal. It's hard to describe, but it feels almost… numb? I've checked the brake fluid level, and that seems fine. Could it be the brake shoes, or perhaps something with the hydraulic brakes themselves? Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2006 Peugeot 207 owner experienced a numb feeling in the brake pedal despite the brake fluid level being fine. Possible causes suggested included issues with the brake shoes, hydraulic brakes, or undervoltage affecting the ABS system. The solution involved taking the car to a workshop, where it was confirmed that an undervoltage issue was affecting the ABS, and the problem was resolved, restoring normal brake pedal feel.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! That numb feeling could point to a few things. Have you noticed any squeaking or grinding noises when you brake? Also, it might be worth checking the condition of your brake lines – any signs of leaks? Another possibility, especially with older cars, is undervoltage. Low voltage can mess with the ABS system, which in turn affects brake pedal feel. Metal brakes are very sensitive to the voltage.

Thanks for the quick reply! No squeaking or grinding, thankfully. I hadn't considered the voltage, though. How would undervoltage affect the brake pedal specifically? Is there a way I can test for that myself?

Essentially, the ABS relies on a consistent voltage to function properly. If the voltage drops, the ABS module might not be able to regulate brake pressure as effectively, leading to that strange pedal feel you described. Unfortunately, testing for that properly usually requires diagnostic equipment. Considering the symptoms, and that it is a 2006 car, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop to get it checked. They can run a proper diagnostic and pinpoint the exact cause. Better safe than sorry when it comes to brakes!

Okay, that makes sense. I appreciate the explanation! I took it to a shop, and you were right – it turned out to be an undervoltage issue affecting the ABS. They sorted it out, and the brake pedal feels normal again. The repair cost me about 240€. Thanks again for your help!
