Corrosion... hmm, good shout. I'll definitely give the connector a closer look. When you say 'safety switch,' is that the same as the clutch pedal switch? And was it a pain to get to on your Astra? Anything to watch out for when I'm poking around?

Yep, clutch pedal switch, safety switch, whatever you want to call it – same thing. As for getting to it... honestly, I paid a mechanic to do it! I remember he mentioned it was a bit fiddly because of the limited space under the dash, so brace yourself. If you're even slightly unsure or the space is too difficult, perhaps getting it done by a professional, with their tools, may save headache.

Okay, cheers for the heads-up! It confirms my suspicion. I will take a peek at the switch and connector, but from your description, that sounds like it will be a job best suited for a workshop. Either way, I appreciate the insight on the safety switch, it might save me some money! Thanks!

Sounds awfully familiar! I had a similar drama with my old Opel Astra, although it was a diesel. Same symptoms, though – error codes popping up related to gear selection, cruise control dead, and the occasional 'won't start' tantrum. Turned out to be a dodgy safety switch on the clutch pedal. The Astra's issue was corrosion in the connector itself. Did you check the plug and wiring around that switch for any obvious damage or corrosion?
