Peugeot 207 Starting Stalling Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2006 Peugeot 207 diesel is experiencing trouble starting and stalling at idle, particularly when cold, with the check engine light on. The issue is suspected to be a defective camshaft sensor or encoder wheel. A similar problem was resolved by checking both the camshaft and crankshaft sensors, with the camshaft sensor ultimately identified as the cause. After replacing the camshaft sensor and addressing the encoder wheel, the car runs perfectly.

I hadn't considered the crankshaft sensor because of the diagnostic codes pointing to the camshaft sensor. Could a faulty crankshaft sensor really cause the same symptoms? How can I tell the difference without just replacing parts?

It's definitely possible. In my case, it turned out to be the camshaft sensor in the end, after the garage checked both. Given your mileage and the symptoms, I'd say it's best to get it checked out by a workshop. They'll be able to properly diagnose the problem and save you money.

I took my Peugeot to a mechanic. The camshaft sensor was indeed defective, likely due to a worn encoder wheel as suspected. The repair was 695€. The car now runs perfectly. Thanks for your help!

I had a similar issue with my 207, though it was a petrol version. Poor starting, stalling, and the check engine light sound familiar. Did you check the crankshaft sensor? Sometimes, a fault there can mimic camshaft sensor problems, or even cause them.
