Peugeot 208 Exhaust Treatment Malfunction

My 2018 Peugeot 208 gasoline is showing an 'exhaust treatment malfunction'. The engine light is on, it runs rough, there's an exhaust leak and a strong exhaust smell. Mileage is 284984 km. Could a defective lambda sensor be the cause?

I had similar issues with my Volvo V40. Check engine light, rough running... Could it be the EGR valve sticking or the catalytic converter failing? Have you checked for any obvious damage to the exhaust pipe itself?

EGR valve or catalytic converter, huh? Is that a common issue? I assumed it was the lambda sensor because of the exhaust smell.

It's not uncommon. A faulty lambda sensor can definitely cause a strong exhaust smell. But the other symptoms made me think of those other possibilities. In the end, I would advise visiting the workshop.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. It was indeed the lambda sensor, as suspected. Cost me 375€ to replace.
