Peugeot 208 preheating lamp and smoke issue

I've got a 2012 diesel 208 with about 55k km on the clock. Recently, the preheating lamp refuses to go off, and the check engine light is mocking me from the dashboard. To make things worse, I'm getting a puff of smoke when I accelerate. I suspect it might be a defective preheating control unit – maybe a dodgy cable or plug. Has anyone seen anything like this before? I'm tearing my hair out!

I also own a 208 diesel. Your symptoms sound like the preheating control unit is indeed defective. Have you checked the component's cable or plug connection for any signs of damage or corrosion? It's a likely cause for these errors.

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, I gave the cable and plug a once-over, but honestly, I'm no expert. Is there anything specific I should be looking for, or any way to properly test the connection before I start throwing money at new parts?

Given your uncertainties, I still think that the cable or plug connection of the component is defective. If you have a similar car model to mine, this is most likely the underlying cause. I'd bring it to a trusted workshop to prevent further damage. They should be able to diagnose the problem precisely.

Took your advice and went to a workshop. You were spot on! Turns out it was indeed a defective preheating control unit, caused by a faulty plug. Repair cost me about 95€, but at least the lights are off, and the smoke is gone. Thanks for the help!
