Thanks for the insight! You mentioned the neutral position switch. Where is that located, and is it something I can test myself, or do I need special tools? Also, how did you eventually diagnose the faulty control unit on your BMW? Was it just process of elimination, or did you use some specific diagnostic equipment?

The neutral position switch is usually located on the transmission itself, near the shift linkage. You can test it with a multimeter, but honestly, unless you're really comfortable with electrical work, it's probably best left to a professional. With my BMW, the shop used a diagnostic computer that pinpointed the control unit. Considering your symptoms and the error code you're getting, I'd say take it to a reputable workshop. A defective control unit can cause all sorts of headaches. I ended up paying around 1000€ for the repair.

Thanks so much for the advice. Sounds like I'm heading to the workshop! They confirmed the control unit is defective and quoted me around 1000€, which is what I expected. Appreciate you sharing your experience; it helped me prepare for the worst!

Sounds rough! I had a similar problem with my old BMW 5 series a while back. Exact same symptoms – engine wouldn't start, check engine light blazing, and weird shifting issues. Turned out to be a faulty control unit as well. Have you checked the neutral position switch? Sometimes that can cause similar problems. But honestly, with those symptoms, it really does sound like the control unit is on its way out. It's a pain, I know!
