Thanks! I haven't checked for error codes yet. Is it crucial to use a scanner, or could it be something else entirely?

While it could be something else like a vacuum leak or even a clogged catalytic converter (unlikely with those symptoms, though), the EGR valve is the most probable culprit. Definitely scan for codes; it'll point you in the right direction. With the Megane, I was convinced it was something simple, but the code reader nailed it. Ended up needing a new EGR valve. Honestly, with those symptoms, I'd get it to a workshop.

Okay, I appreciate the advice. I got it scanned. The error code confirmed it: EGR valve defective. I had it replaced at the local garage, and the total bill came to 355€. Now she's purring like a kitten again. Thanks a bunch for your help!

Hey, sounds rough. I had similar symptoms with my Renault Megane. Reduced power, check engine light, the whole shebang. Turned out to be a dodgy EGR valve too. Have you checked for any error codes using an OBD2 scanner? That might give you a more definitive answer before you start tearing things apart.
