No shift lock issues. Would a faulty transmission sensor only cause these symptoms, or are there other things I should look for before replacing the control unit?

It could be just the sensor, but with error codes and shifting issues, the control unit is also highly suspect. Best to get it checked by a shop. Could save you money in the long run.

Just to let you know, I took it to a certified workshop as you recommended. It was indeed the control unit and needed replacing. The final cost was 1000€. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, your advice was invaluable.

Sounds rough. I've seen similar things happen when the transmission sensor goes bad. Any issues with the shift lock? Have you checked the gear linkage for any obvious damage?
