Peugeot 301 knocking combustion
Summary of the thread
A 2014 Peugeot 301 with a gasoline engine is experiencing knocking combustion, reduced engine power, and jerking during acceleration, accompanied by smoke. The issue is suspected to be caused by combustion chamber deposits affecting ignition timing. A workshop confirmed significant deposits in the combustion chamber, cleaned it, and adjusted the timing, resolving the problem.

Thanks for the quick reply! It seems to be more pronounced when the engine is cold, but it's definitely still present when warmed up. I haven't checked the cylinder heads myself. I'm guessing that's not a straightforward DIY job?

Yeah, the cold start makes me think combustion chamber deposits even more. While cleaning the cylinder heads can be a DIY job, it's involved. Given the symptoms and mileage, it might be best to get it looked at by a workshop. They can diagnose it properly and potentially do some engine tuning after cleaning.

Appreciate the advice. I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on - significant deposits in the combustion chamber. They cleaned it out and adjusted the timing. Cost me 425€, but it's running smoothly again. Thanks!

I had a similar issue with my 301. Does it happen mostly when the engine is cold, or is it constant? Have you checked your cylinder heads recently? It could be related to carbon buildup affecting the fuel octane requirements.
