When you mention 'fiddled with the connections', which specific connections are you referring to? Did you access the connections at the sensors, or at a control module elsewhere?

On the Volvo, I removed the rear bumper cover to get to the sensor connectors. I unplugged them, sprayed electrical contact cleaner, and plugged them back in. I also checked the wiring. Check those connectors first, but if you're getting an error code, a workshop might be best. Could save you a headache.

I took the vehicle to a trusted workshop, following your advice. A faulty wiring harness was the problem. The repair cost 95€, which I think is reasonable. Thanks for your input.

I had something similar on my old Volvo V60. My parking sensors went haywire after a rainstorm. Water had gotten into one of the radar sensors. I cleaned the connections, and it worked for a bit, but eventually, the sensor died. Have you checked the sensors for damage or corrosion? It might be a simple fix.
