I haven't specifically checked the fan, but I will. If it's the thermostat, would that also trigger the incorrect temperature reading on the dash and the check engine light?

Yes, a faulty thermostat can definitely cause both the temperature reading and the check engine light to act up. In my case, it ended up being a faulty sensor, but I'd still suggest you visit a workshop to have it diagnosed properly. It is possible the cooling grille is restricted, but that's less likely to produce all the symptoms you mentioned.

Thanks for the advice. I had it checked, and it turns out the heating resistor 1 was short-circuited, which then caused the fuse of the electric fan control to blow. The whole repair cost 52€.

I had something similar happen on my 307. The symptoms were very much like yours. Have you checked whether the radiator fan is running constantly or not at all? That could point to a faulty sensor or thermostat which then makes the car believe it's always cold, like a broken furnace thermostat making your heater run nonstop.
