Peugeot 307 engine knocking loss of power

My 2002 Peugeot 307 (gasoline engine) is knocking like crazy under load. Engine power is way down, it jerks when I accelerate, and there's smoke. It's got 115958 km on the clock and I scanned it, finding an error code. Could this be serious?

I had a similar issue with my Peugeot 307 a while back. Same symptoms – knocking, loss of power. Have you checked for carbon deposits in the combustion chamber? That was the culprit for me.

Carbon deposits, huh? How did you figure that out? Was it a pain to fix? I'm not sure I'm experienced enough to start tearing down the cylinder heads myself...

Yeah, carbon buildup. It's a common problem. I took it to a workshop, they confirmed it with a camera inspection. They cleaned everything up, and it sorted the issue. I wouldn't recommend tackling it yourself unless you really know what you're doing.

I took it to a mechanic as you suggested. Turns out you were spot on - combustion chamber was full of deposits! Cost me 425€ to get it sorted, but the knocking's gone and it's running like a champ again. Thanks!
