Peugeot 307 preheating lamp issue

I'm having trouble with my 2001 Peugeot 307 diesel. The preheating lamp stays on, and the check engine light is also on. The car smokes when I accelerate. It has 190946 km. I suspect a defective preheating control unit. Has anyone else had this issue? I'm thinking it's a faulty cable or plug connection to the preheating unit.

Sounds frustrating. I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra, though the symptoms weren't exactly the same. My glow plug light stayed on, indicating a problem with the vehicle heater system. Have you checked the relay for the preheating unit? That was the problem in my case.

Thanks for the suggestion. When you say glow plug light, do you mean it stayed on constantly, even after the engine was warm? Because that's what's happening here. What fixed your Astra? Was it just replacing the relay, or was there more to it?

Yes, the glow plug light stayed on constantly. Replacing the relay solved the problem on my Astra. Given the age of our cars, it's probably best to get it checked at a workshop to rule out any deeper electrical issues. But it does sound very similar.

Appreciate the insight. Turns out I was right. It was the cable/plug connection to the preheating unit. The repair cost 95€ at my local garage. Thanks again for the guidance!
