I haven't inspected the EGR valve directly. What specific signs should I look for when examining it?

Honestly, it's difficult to tell without proper tools and experience. Mine looked relatively clean from the outside. The symptoms you describe sound pretty conclusive though. If you're not comfortable diagnosing it yourself, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. Better safe than sorry.

I took it to a workshop for a professional diagnosis. It was a defective EGR valve, and the repair cost 355€. Thanks for the help!

I had something similar with my 308. Reduced power and the check engine light were the first signs. Rough running too, but no smoke. Have you checked the EGR valve itself for obvious signs of being jammed or blocked?
