Regarding the air-fuel ratio, is there a way to assess this without specialized equipment? If the oxygen sensor is faulty, would that consistently trigger the check engine light?

Yep, a faulty oxygen sensor can throw that check engine light like crazy, especially with the lean running you're describing. Without proper diagnostics, the air-fuel ratio can be tricky. Honestly, with those symptoms, I'd get it to a workshop. Could save you a lot of headache!

I appreciate your input; it reaffirms my suspicions. I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on. It was indeed a defective fuel injector. The total repair cost came to 515€ Thank you again for the advice.

Reduced engine power, check engine light, rough running AND jerking? Sounds nasty! Have you checked the basics, like spark plugs or the air-fuel ratio? Could be an oxygen sensor or even the mass air flow sensor acting up. What have you checked so far?
