Peugeot 308 oil pressure warning

Thanks for the reply! I'm using 5W-30, which is what the manual recommends. I changed the oil and filter about 8,000 km ago. The engine seems to be running a bit rougher than usual, now that you mention it. If the oil and filter are relatively new, what else could cause the low pressure and noises? Could it be the oil pump itself?

Okay, 5W-30 is the correct viscosity. Given the rough running and noises alongside the oil pressure light, and the oil change being relatively recent, a defect in the oil pump is a very likely cause. Sadly, with those symptoms continuing to be present, it's likely too late to prevent damage to the engine bearings if the pump is indeed failing. I strongly recommend getting it to a workshop as soon as possible. Continuing to drive it in this state could lead to catastrophic engine failure. Expect a repair bill in the neighborhood of 755€, depending on parts and labor.

Thanks so much for your help! I took it to a workshop as you suggested. You were right – it was indeed the oil pump, and some damage to the engine bearings as well. Got it all sorted, cost me around 755€ like you predicted. Really appreciate the advice!

Low oil pressure with those symptoms is definitely concerning. A faulty sensor could trigger the light, but the loud mechanical noises suggest a real lubrication problem. Have you noticed any changes in the engine's performance, like reduced power or rough running? What oil viscosity are you using, and when was the last time you changed the oil and filter? Incorrect oil viscosity or a clogged filter could contribute to low oil pressure. Ignoring this could cause major engine damage, especially to the engine bearings.
