Peugeot 308 power steering issue

I've got a 2011 Peugeot 308 diesel with 171,000 km. The power steering is acting up: the steering wheel vibrates and feels spongy. Sometimes it takes a lot more effort to turn, almost like it fails completely. I scanned for errors and found one related to the steering system. Fluid level seems fine. Any ideas?

Sounds like a pain! Is the vibration constant, or does it only happen at certain speeds or when turning? When you say 'spongy', do you mean there's excessive play in the wheel before the car actually starts to turn? It could be a few things, but those details might help narrow it down.

Good questions! The vibration is worse at lower speeds, especially when parking. And yeah, 'spongy' means there's a noticeable lag and play in the steering wheel before the car responds. Like, I turn the wheel a bit, and nothing happens for a split second. Does that point to anything specific?

Okay, with the vibration being worse at low speeds and the play in the wheel, it really does sound like something is up with the power steering system itself. It could be a faulty sensor, pump, or even something electrical. It’s hard to say for sure without getting it properly diagnosed. Seeing as you've already got an error code stored, my advice would be to take it to a workshop. They'll be able to pinpoint the exact cause.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a local garage, and they found a defective cable connection on the power steering. They cleaned the contacts, re-seated the connector, and cleared the error. Steering feels normal again! The total cost was 95€, so I'm pretty happy it wasn't something more serious.
