Peugeot 4008 Transfer Case Oil Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Peugeot 4008 with 83,043 km is experiencing gearbox slipping and unclean shifts, likely due to worn-out transfer case oil. The symptoms include dark, sludgy oil and grinding noises, especially when shifting into third gear. The issue is suspected to be caused by defective gears in the transfer case. A workshop visit confirmed the problem, and the repair involved addressing the worn gears in the transfer case.

Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah, I checked the oil – it's dark and kinda sludgy. And yep, a bit of a grinding noise sometimes, especially going into 3rd. Was it definitely the transfer case in your case?

Confirmed. Those symptoms point to the transfer case. Those defective gears caused the oil wear. I'd suggest a workshop visit to be sure.

Thanks so much! I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on! They confirmed it was the transfer case, gears were worn. Cost me 330€ for the repair but at least it's sorted! Appreciate the help!

I had a similar issue with my 4008. Gearbox felt rough. Have you checked the transfer case oil level and condition? Grinding noises while shifting?
