Peugeot 406 automatic transmission issue
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI is experiencing starting issues, with the check engine light on and the automatic transmission seemingly stuck in park despite the shifter moving. The gearbox also feels like it slips or shifts uncleanly. The problem is suspected to be related to a defective control unit, which was confirmed by a workshop diagnosis. Replacing the faulty control unit resolved the issue.

It's pretty constant now. And no, it doesn't seem to be engaging neutral correctly, feels like something is still partially locked. Did you also have the check engine light?

Yep, check engine light was on for me too. Sounds like the same problem I had. Turned out to be a defective control unit as suspected. I'd suggest getting it checked out at a workshop.

Thanks for the info! Took it to a workshop and you were right, the control unit was faulty. Cost me around 1000€ to get it fixed, but at least it's running again.

I had something similar with my 406. Does it happen intermittently, or is it constant now? When it happens, does it feel like it's actually engaging neutral properly, or is it still partially locked?
