Peugeot 406 Central Locking Fault
Summary of the thread
The central locking system on a 2004 Peugeot 406 was malfunctioning, with neither the remote nor the key working. The suspected cause was a faulty door contact signal, possibly due to a dodgy cable or plug connection. A similar issue was resolved by checking the wiring harness between the door pillar and the door, where wires can break or chafe. Repairing a broken wire in this area successfully restored the central locking function.

Could you be more specific about which part of the wiring harness to check? I'm not super technically gifted when it comes to car electrics. I understand it's a bundle of wires, but where is this bundle exactly?

It's the section of wiring that runs between the door pillar (the body of the car) and the door itself. It's usually covered in a rubber boot. If you're not comfortable, I'd recommend a workshop. It cost me 95€ to have it diagnosed and fixed.

Based on your advice, I took it to my local mechanic, and you were spot on – it was a broken wire in the door wiring harness. They repaired it, and the central locking is working perfectly again! I really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.

I had a similar issue with my 406. Check the wiring harness where it enters the door – those wires flex and can break or chafe over time, especially the door sensor wiring. That was the culprit in my case.
