Peugeot 406 EGR Valve Problem

My 2004 Peugeot 406 diesel is having issues at 211250 km. I think the EGR valve is defective. Symptoms: reduced engine power, check engine light, smoke during acceleration, rough running, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and loud hissing. Could this be a vacuum leak related to recirculation and emissions, impacting the catalytic converter?

I had a similar issue with my 2012 Opel Astra. The symptoms you describe resonate with what I experienced. Have you checked for any unusual noises coming from the engine bay, especially when idling? It could point towards a vacuum leak affecting the EGR valve's performance. Was there any change in the car's behavior?

Regarding the Opel Astra issue, did you observe any specific trends in the rough engine running, such as its occurrence during particular engine temperatures or load conditions? Were there any diagnostic trouble codes, and which specific areas did you examine when addressing the recirculating exhaust?

Indeed, the rough running was more pronounced at lower engine temperatures. The diagnostic codes pointed to an EGR valve malfunction, and based on the symptoms, the workshop determined it was best to replace it. Given the similarities, a professional diagnosis for your Peugeot might be a good idea.

The source of the problem was indeed the EGR valve, as suspected. The valve was defective and jammed. Replacement cost 355€.
