Peugeot 406 Knocking Combustion

I'm having knocking combustion issues with my 2004 Peugeot 406 gasoline engine. Mileage is 172698 km. I've noticed reduced power, jerking during acceleration, smoke, and a stored error code. I suspect combustion chamber deposits. Anyone had similar pre-ignition problems? Any advice on ignition timing or cylinder head decarbonization?

Whoa, sounds rough! I had a similar thing with my 406. Detonation is a pain. Is it worse when the engine's cold?

Yes, the symptoms are worse during cold starts. What issues did you have, and how did you diagnose the cause? Any specific parameters or fault codes you saw would be helpful.

Yep, cold starts were the worst! Sounded like marbles rattling around in the engine. I didn't get too deep into diagnostics myself, to be honest. I took it to a workshop. They sorted it, but it wasn't cheap.

Following your recommendation, I consulted a technician. They confirmed excessive carbon deposits in the combustion chambers were causing the knocking. Cleaning the chambers and components cost 425€. The car is now running normally.
