Beyond visual inspection and contact cleaning, is there a method to effectively test the hall sensor's functionality prior to replacement, or is relying solely on error codes sufficient?

While you could try testing the sensor itself with a multimeter, interpreting the readings can be difficult without the proper specs. Considering the symptoms and potential wiring issues, it might be worth having a workshop take a look, especially if you're not comfortable tracing electrical faults.

The issue was indeed a defective sensor cable. Repair, including parts and labor, amounted to 95€. The tailgate now functions as expected.

Electrical sensor issues can be tricky. Did you check the sensor wiring for damage or corrosion? Maybe try cleaning the contacts before digging deeper.
