Yeah, it's an automatic. I'll check the oil level tomorrow. Where is the sensor located, and is it easy to get to?

It's usually on the transmission housing itself. Access can be a pain depending on your setup, but honestly, with those symptoms, you might be better off having a workshop take a look. Low oil can cause the sensor to freak out, but slipping and grinding suggest something more serious.

Right, thanks for the heads-up. Dropped it at the shop; turned out the gearbox oil was indeed low. They replaced the oil sensor while they were at it. Cost me 365€, but it's shifting smoothly again.

Sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my 406. Is it an automatic? It could be the oil sensor, especially with those symptoms. Have you checked the oil level?
