Peugeot 406 Transmission Issues

My 2000 Peugeot 406, gasoline engine, is playing up. 249064 km on the clock. The engine warning light is on, and I've got an error stored related to transmission oil temperature. Gearbox is in emergency mode sometimes, shifts are unclean, and occasionally I hear grinding noises. Suspect low gearbox oil. Anyone seen this before?

Sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my 406. Is it an automatic? It could be the oil sensor, especially with those symptoms. Have you checked the oil level?

Yeah, it's an automatic. I'll check the oil level tomorrow. Where is the sensor located, and is it easy to get to?

It's usually on the transmission housing itself. Access can be a pain depending on your setup, but honestly, with those symptoms, you might be better off having a workshop take a look. Low oil can cause the sensor to freak out, but slipping and grinding suggest something more serious.

Right, thanks for the heads-up. Dropped it at the shop; turned out the gearbox oil was indeed low. They replaced the oil sensor while they were at it. Cost me 365€, but it's shifting smoothly again.
