Peugeot 407 exhaust pressure issue
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Peugeot 407 with a diesel engine exhibited reduced engine power, smoke during acceleration, and a strong exhaust smell, leading to suspicion of a particulate filter issue related to exhaust pressure. The problem was identified as a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor, which was providing incorrect data to the ECU, causing the symptoms. Replacing the sensor resolved the issue, restoring the car's performance.

I am unsure about forced regeneration, I bought the car recently. Could a defective sensor really cause all these issues?

Yes, it can. The sensor provides readings to the ECU, which then controls fuel injection and regeneration. If the sensor is faulty, the ECU receives incorrect data, leading to the described symptoms. But, I'd recommend getting it professionally diagnosed; could be something else but the sensor is the most likely culprit.

Thank you for your input. It was indeed the exhaust back pressure sensor. I replaced it for 245€ at a local workshop and the car runs like new.

That sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms with my old Volvo – though the engine was petrol. It turned out to be a faulty sensor causing the DPF to think it was blocked. Has the car had a forced DPF regeneration recently?
