Thanks! Could you elaborate on how you located the split? Any specific tests, or was it just visual inspection?

I tried to find it myself but in the end I took it to a local workshop. They put some smoke in the air intake and spotted the leak straight away. Replacing the hose sorted it out for me. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, I'd recommend getting a professional to take a look.

Thanks for the recommendation. After taking it to my local service center, they confirmed the intake hose was leaking. The hose has been replaced and the total cost, including labor, came to 100€. The car is now running perfectly, and the check engine light is off.

I have a Peugeot 407 too, and your symptoms sound awfully familiar. I had a very similar experience last year. High fuel consumption, check engine light, and that hissing noise! For me, it turned out to be a split in the intake hose, right after the air filter box. Check that area carefully.
