Peugeot 408 damping adjustment fault

I'm having a really annoying problem with my 2010 Peugeot 408, gasoline engine. It's done 166830 km. I'm getting a 'damping adjustment fault' error. The warning light is on, and the ride is super bumpy, like the suspension is totally gone. I've checked for anything visibly broken, but I can't see anything. I read online it might be a defective cable or plug connection. Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas before I take it to a shop?

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Peugeot 408 with a gasoline engine and 166,830 km is experiencing a 'damping adjustment fault' error, resulting in a bumpy ride and a warning light. The issue might be due to a defective cable or plug connection. A similar case was resolved by checking and replacing a faulty connector near the shock absorbers, which cleared the error code.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had something similar with my 408! Noticed the bumpy ride first, then the warning light came on. Damping adjustment, eh? Sounds like a suspension issue, could be anything from a dodgy sensor to the shock absorber itself. A 'cable or plug connection defective' sounds plausible. Have you tried wiggling the connectors on the suspension components? Sometimes, a loose connection can cause havoc.

Thanks for the reply! When you say wiggling the connectors, where exactly are these connectors located? Are they easy to get to? I'm not super mechanically inclined, but I can usually manage simple stuff if I know what I'm looking for. Did your issue end up being a connector problem, or something more serious?

It was definitely a pain. The connectors are usually near the top of the shock absorbers, but honestly, getting to them can be a bit of a hassle depending on your setup. In my case, it turned out to be more than just a loose connection. The error message remained. If it's not something obvious, I'd recommend getting it checked at a workshop. Suspension problems can be tricky and potentially dangerous to mess with if you don't know what you're doing.

Thanks so much for the advice! I took it to a local garage, and you were spot on, it was indeed a faulty connection. They replaced the connector and cleared the error code. Cost me 95€ all in, which I was happy with. At least it wasn't a new shock absorber!
