Peugeot 408 Heavy Steering Vibration

Hi, I have a 2018 Peugeot 408 diesel with about 150k km on the clock. Lately, the steering has become increasingly heavy, almost like the power steering is failing intermittently. Also, I'm getting some vibrations through the steering wheel. I've checked the power steering fluid level, which is fine, and had a quick look for any obvious leaks, but couldn't see anything. Could this be a steering angle sensor issue? Anyone experienced similar?

Hey, I had a similar issue on my 408. The heavy steering and vibrations sound familiar. Have you had any alignment problems recently or noticed if the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) light is on? A faulty steering angle sensor can definitely cause those symptoms, and sometimes it throws off the ESP system too.

Thanks for the quick reply! No alignment issues that I'm aware of, and the ESP light hasn't come on. Is there any way to check the sensor without specialized equipment, or is it something best left to a workshop?

Honestly, without diagnostic tools, it's tough to pinpoint the issue for sure. In my case, it turned out the coding of the steering angle sensor was faulty. It messed with the power steering assist and caused the vibrations you described. A workshop can read the sensor data and recalibrate it if necessary. Better to get it checked before it causes any further issues with the steering or ESP.

Appreciate the insight! I'll book it in with a workshop to get the steering angle sensor checked out. It turns out that you were spot on with the steering angle sensor, it was defective. Repair cost was 195€. Thanks again!
