Peugeot 5008 Transmission Issues
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Peugeot 5008 diesel was experiencing transmission issues, including warning lights and rough gear shifts, suspected to be due to overheating. The problem was identified as a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor, potentially caused by low gearbox oil levels. The suggested solution was to check and top up the gearbox oil and replace the faulty sensor, which resolved the issue and restored smooth shifting.

Good call on the oil level! I hadn't thought of that. Is there an easy way to check the level myself, or am I better off just taking it to a shop? And if it IS low, what kind of oil does that transmission take?

Checking the transmission oil level on those can be a bit tricky without the right tools and knowledge. It often involves specific fill plugs and procedures. Also identifying the correct oil type is paramount to prevent damage (wrong oil viscosity might result in damage to the internal components). Considering the symptoms and the sensor fault, I'd strongly suggest taking it to a workshop. They can properly diagnose the root cause – whether it's just low oil, a faulty sensor, or something more serious within the gearbox. Could save you a lot of headaches (and money) in the long run.

Thanks! I appreciate the advice. I bit the bullet and took it to a shop. Turns out the gearbox oil was indeed low, triggering the sensor fault and all the shifting drama. They topped it up and replaced the faulty sensor. Cost me 365€, but it's shifting smooth as butter now! Cheers for pointing me in the right direction.

Sounds rough! That sensor is crucial for the transmission's electronic control unit (ECU) to manage gear changes properly. If it's faulty, the ECU might be getting incorrect temperature readings and messing up the shift points, or even triggering emergency mode to protect the gearbox. Have you checked your gearbox oil level? Low oil can definitely cause overheating and sensor errors.
