Thanks! Oil sludge is something I hadn't considered. Where should I look for this sludge, and can I check it myself without special tools?

Honestly, it's tricky to check without pulling things apart. Given the symptoms, and that it could be the VANOS solenoid, or even the timing chain itself, maybe best to get it checked at a workshop. They can properly diagnose it. Cost me around 250€, parts and labor.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I appreciate you confirming my suspicions and suggesting a workshop visit. It turned out to be a faulty camshaft solenoid valve. The repair set me back about 250€, just as you predicted. All is well now!

I had something similar with my 5008. VANOS issues are never fun, are they? Did you check for oil sludge? Sometimes that messes with the VANOS solenoid and variable timing.
