Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have noticed a slight drop in power, especially when accelerating. Could a faulty camshaft solenoid valve really cause all this? And how can I be sure it's not something else, like the timing chain?

Indeed, a defective camshaft solenoid valve or a disruption in its power supply is a probable cause. A malfunctioning solenoid can impede the correct adjustment of the camshaft timing, leading to suboptimal engine performance and increased fuel consumption, triggering the check engine light. While a stretched timing chain can also manifest similar symptoms, the sudden onset and relatively lower mileage suggest the solenoid valve as the more immediate suspect. However, a diagnostic scan is paramount. I recommend consulting a qualified workshop.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on – it was a faulty camshaft solenoid valve. Repair cost was around 250€. Sorted!

Greetings. While 'VANOS' is typically a BMW thing, the principle is shared across manufacturers. Given the check engine light and increased fuel consumption, a fault within the inlet camshaft's variable timing mechanism is plausible. Have you observed any performance degradation, such as low power, particularly at lower engine speeds?
