Peugeot 607 CEL and Fuel Consumption

My 2001 Peugeot 607 diesel is throwing a CEL and fuel consumption is through the roof. I suspect faulty inlet VANOS mechanics. I've checked the air filter and MAF sensor, but no luck. Anyone seen this on these older models? I'm getting a 'low power' feeling, like it's not breathing right. Could it be the VANOS solenoid, or something more sinister like the timing chain?

I had similar symptoms on my 607. Check the camshaft solenoid valves and their power supply. A defect there could cause those issues.

Interesting. So, you reckon it's more likely to be electrical than mechanical then? Was your check engine light on and fuel consumption increased? What fault code were you getting?

Yes, CEL illuminated and fuel consumption was up. I would go to the workshop to read out the fault codes. The fault code will give a good indication if the fault is in the VANOS mechanics.

Thanks for the tip! I had the codes read, and it pointed to a faulty VANOS solenoid. Replaced it and the issue is gone. Cost me about 250€ in total. Appreciate the help!
