Peugeot 607 Crankshaft Sensor Issue

I've got a 2007 Peugeot 607, diesel engine, with about 178k km on the clock. Recently, the check engine light popped up, and I've noticed a definite drop in power, sluggish response, and my fuel consumption has gone up. I scanned it and got a 'Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value' error. I'm thinking it might be the crankshaft sensor acting up. Anyone else experienced this?

Sounds familiar. Is the engine misfiring at all? Could be a cam sensor issue too, but given the error code, crankshaft sensor is the more likely culprit. When was the timing chain last checked?

No misfires that I've noticed. The timing chain hasn't been checked in ages, to be honest. Could a stretched timing chain cause this 'Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value' issue? I'm not super familiar with that.

A stretched timing chain could definitely throw off the engine synchronization and cause that error. However, given the symptoms and the error code pointing directly to the crankshaft/camshaft relationship, it's still more likely to be a faulty sensor. Best to get it properly diagnosed.

Thanks for the insight! I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on. Turns out the crankshaft sensor was indeed defective. New sensor installed, and the issue is resolved. Cost me around 340€, including labor. Appreciate the help!
